Phoolbagh colony is on the outskirts of Vizianagaram and has been provided by the government for leprosy victims. Sixty families affected by Hansen’s disease live in this colony. Most of these victims are not accepted into regular manual work and therefore earn their living through begging in the market place.
Bridge of Hope has been supporting the families of Leprosy victims for over 30 years now. Each month, Bridge of Hope provides rice, dressing materials for ulcer care and medication for chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, hyper acidity etc. As there are no new infections in this population, the elderly population is gradually being replaced by healthy children.
Bridge of Hope started a Spoorthi centre at the Phoolbagh colony to provide opportunity for the holistic development of the grandchildren. Twenty-eight children in the primary school age group were enrolled in Spoorthi in 2022.
