Provision of health care to the rural poor has been the earliest of BOH activities. The beneficiaries of the medical services are women, children and the elderly – most vulnerable and often neglected. Late Dr. Devanandam started centres for primary health care in Gotlam in the late 80s and extended medical services to surrounding villages.
Shalom Medical Centre was inaugurated in January 2008 to bring specialty health care services closer to the community. Started with eye care for the marginalized rural community in Vizianagaram district, today Shalom provides speciality services like comprehensive eye care, child health services, general medical & emergency services. Chemotherapy for childhood leukaemias has been a special focus area for over 7 years now. Through medical outreach, most neglected & vulnerable communities are provided with free medical treatment. Shalom is equipped with basic laboratory, ECG and X-ray facilities.
The ophthalmology unit started by Dr. Sucharitha restores vision to over 800 patients each year. All these patients are provided with free surgery, transportation, food and hospital stay for 2 days. Drs. Anil Benjamin and Santhi moved to Gotlam in 2009 and initiated general medical and paediatric services at Shalom. Speciality clinics for General surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetric have commenced in 2019.
Shalom continues to spread healing and hope to the marginalised rural and tribal communities in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh.
